If anyone asked me to characterize the artistic profile of Piotr Drozdowski, which is already quite explicit, I would respond: "Piotr Drozdowski is a painter". Does this tersely expressed "review" have any, more individual, point of reference?

Of course it does, since there is a long and difficult way from painting to becoming a painter - the way which has already led astray numerous promising students of this artistic profession. It does, because there are only few among a large number of art lovers holding an academic graduation diploma who unreservedly deserve to be called painters. And, finally, it does because talent and work do not always guarantee success. Why then Piotr Drozdowski did succeed?

I believe that at the basis of what he has already accomplished lies a harmonious balance between the real and artistic perception of the world. Already in his early works of art there reveals itself an immensely rare (among the present-day artists) attempt at accepting life and searching for its bright sides. He transforms this attitude into the language of plastic forms. Instead of rebellion and aggression he chose to give prominence to his liking for the world’s beauty - the beauty which attracts, inspires and constantly endows us with experiences. It is reflected both in the way of painting, and in the ideological program of the paintings which also yields some room for intuition. Drozdowicz says: "I strive to show my vision of the world. It is a spiritual or, should I rather say, inner realm, even though I use shapes, figures and suggestions of a landscape. I do not know when my figures transform into stone or rock and I do not understand why the cold stone comes to life".

The expressionism of the early works dating back to the end of the 80s changes into an impressionistic study of an interior or landscape (the open-air area in Jeżowo) in order to come closer to the tradition of Polish colorism (the portrait of Jerzy Bereś). Numerous technique - related attempts allow for finding a proper way to render emotions, mood, the moment. Since 1992 there begins an ordering of experiences, striving for synthesis. Shapes of trees, reed, objects become more and more set apart from reality and transform into their own vision, in an idea. Aside from easel painting, Drozdowski also looks at glass painting, creates mural painting. Talking about the latter one it is necessary to mention the two essential works: the diploma one, in 1998 (al fresco and sgraffito) at the Tysiąclecie district in Poznań and the painting done at the grand stand of the city stadium in Blain, France.

Recently, many works by Piotr Drozdowski have been realized by means of watercolors. It may indicate the continuation of the artist’s quest. Especially, that the observations explicitly demonstrate connection of technique with the poetics of creation, with the message of a given painting. Drozdowicz emphasizes an important role of light in his work. And it is not only in the physical sense. He says:"I am searching for a true light because the one that has got the light, also knows his way. The water - color technique allows for the use of much light, the whiteness of paper brightens up each patch from the inside out". Water-color has also dominated Piotr Drozdowski's exhibition in the Brittany House. The exhibition is open to the public from November to December 2000. The title of the exhibition is "The Hidden Light".
