University accreditation
On 27th
September 2000 the University Accreditation Committee organised
a seminar devoted to the quality of education. The seminar, which
was held in Poznań, was combined with a ceremony of awarding certificates
by the President of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities,
Prof. Stefan Jurga, Rector of the Adam Mickiewicz University.
The seminar is a result of an Alliance of Polish Universities in
favour of the Quality of Education concluded in October 1997 and
amended on 11th October 1999. The Alliance is a non-governmental
organisation grouping universities interested in providing high
quality education. The group comprises: Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński
University, Szczecin University, Wrocław University, M. Curie-Skłodowska
University, Mikołaj Kopernik University, the University in Białystok,
Adam Mickiewicz University, Jagielloński University in Cracow, Pope’s
Theological Academy in Cracow, ŁódĽ University, Opole University,
Gdańsk University, Warsaw University, ¦l±sk University, Lublin Catholic
University and Warmia-Mazury University.
In January 1998 the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities
brought the University Accreditation Committee into existence. Members
of the Committee include a provost and rector’s representative of
the all universities, signatories of the Alliance. The initial objective
of the Committee was to create a system of accreditation of different
fields of study. The University Accreditation Committee is still
responsible for negotiating uniform standards of the quality of
education at universities within the framework of particular fields
of study.
In the academic year 1999/2000 the Committee awarded a total of
47 certificates of quality of education. Adam Mickiewicz University
and Jagiellonian University boast the highest number of accredited
specializations and fields of study.
The seminar was organised with the view to propagating the idea
of university accreditation aimed at a systematic improvement in
the quality of education at Polish universities.
