The
Herd of Stallions
Although Sieraków's coat
of arms features deer's head with huge antlers, the town is primarily
associated with horses due to the local Herd of Stallions.
Horse
"daddies" have been bred here in an organised way since 1829,
when the Herd of Stallions was established. The idea was initiated by
the Germans during the partitions. The created herd was to provide the
Duchy of Poznań with reproductive material. Sieraków was the chosen site
due to its favourable location and the existence of big stables built
at the turn of the 16th century.
The system of breeding in Sieraków was tailored mainly to the needs of
agriculture and the army yet, with time, the sporting aspect has started
to come to the fore. The major part of the present stock are horses of
the Wielkopolska breed, whose application abilities are versatile, sport
including. There is a horse riding section boasting many medals won at
domestic and international contests.
The
facilities of the Sie- raków Herd of Stallions constitute a
tourist attraction. Centuries old stables are interesting from the point
of view of architecture. Particularly noteworthy is also the collection
of carriages and harnesses. One can ride a cart pulled by horses, try
horse riding or participate in the autumn chase of St Hubert. If
you opt for a more reflexive manner of spending your leisure time you
can take a rest under old oak trees. And when you feel hungry you can
have a meal in the Hubertus restaurant at the premises of the centre.
Be our guest - you are most welcome.
